Maik Twelsiek and Swen Sundberg raced Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains and they finished on the great third and fourth place.
At the start line in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, it had less than 10 degrees Celsius. Maik is used to hot climate as he lives in the desert of Tucson, Arizona. It was quite tough form him. Swen came from Europe where the weather has already cooled down. He had more problems to recover from the long journey.
Though both started motivated into the race. Maik who likes to swim in open water much better than in the pool was just one minute behind the American leader Brian Fleischmann. On Maik’s side was the 2-time Wildflower winner Jesse Thomas who left everyone behind him on the bike. Around Maik a group of a few athletes grew. Swen who was another 30 seconds behind Maik could close that gap on the first kilometres of the bike course. After that he tried to pass the group but it did not work. 2,5 minutes behind Thomas Maik, Swen and the rest of the chaser’s group came to the second transition area. With a solid run Maik could take the third place behind the American Jordan Jones. Swen was not happy with his half marathon though he finished fourth.
Maik commented his first race after Ironman New York where it did not run that well after the competition: “I was afraid of the cold weather which I usually do not like. But after the start gun went off it was fine. I am satisfied with all three disciplines, especially with the run. It was the first time this season I had no problems the entire way to the finish.” Maik and Swen will see each other again in a few weeks at the Ironman Arizona which will be their last race of this year.
